The Grossarl valley is a popular tourist region Salzburg county. The Grossarl valley is located 70 km south of the Mozart city Salzburg. The Grossarl valley is one of the longest Tauern valleys in Salzburg and runs 30 km from the town of St. Johann in Pongau south.The Grossarl valley is a so-called "dead-end" valley. That means that the valley is only reachable by one road so there is no distracting traffic to disturb your holiday!
After about 16 km you reach the main town in the valley, Grossarl. Grossarl has an elevation of 920 m above sea level and has a population of 3800. 8 km further is the town of Huettschlag at the elevation of 1030 m and has a population of 970. The valley snakes another 8 km down the valley after Huettschlag. The valley end of Huettschlag is a popular destination as well as a the starting point for hikes to the Hohe Tauern National Park.
The south part of the valley is surrounded by the high peaks of Hohe Tauern. The highest mountain peak is called "Keeskogel" at the elevation of 2884 m. The mountains of the Grosarl valley are a popular hiking region with over 40 operating chalets and over 450 km of marked hiking trails.
In winter, the ski area Grossarl - Dorfgastein is the mid-point of ski sports in the Grossarl valley. Modern ski lifts bring you to the top of the slopes in just a few minutes where you will find appropriate slopes for all levels. Of course there are many activities aside from the slopes such as cross-country skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, alpine touring and much more.
